Ford Mustang GT Coupe overview

Mustang. If there’s a name that has more enduring magic—magic that blends fun, performance, and style in one attainable, unmistakable package—we don’t know what it is. The Mustang was the progenitor of the pony car in the go-go ’60s, it persisted through the performance emasculations of the ’70s and ’80s, survived when its rivals perished, and in its latest renewal posted sales numbers strong enough to inspire renewed competitors from Chevrolet and Dodge.

One of the last remaining live-axle passenger cars, the Mustang isn’t exactly high tech, the back seat isn’t that useful, there are quivers in the convertible’s chassis, and the performance of the pricey supercharged Shelby GT500 doesn’t seem to measure up to its 500-hp rating. On the other hand, the 300-hp, 4.6-liter V-8–powered Mustang GT coupe and convertible represent an excellent performance buy, and the 4.0-liter V-6 versions are exceptionally robust. More important, the Mustang defies comparisons. If you like the style of this all-American classic, there is simply no substitute.

Front-seat side airbags are added as a standard feature for all models. High-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights and interior ambient lighting have been added to the options list. A special Bullitt edition Mustang is also available this year.

Standard safety features are skimpy in the basic Mustangs, and a stability-control system isn’t offered at all. Anti-lock brakes are standard on GT and Shelby GT500 versions, optional on V-6 models. Dual-stage front airbags and seat-mounted side airbags are standard.
