It is common that term ”strut” is used for car running gear, or, to be more specific, to its suspension. Originally, the task of these struts was absorption of vibrations of suspension components and body. But automobile manufacturing develops so quickly and now struts are used in other car components. Especially this refers to hood. Recently bonnet stays were used for opening of hood or trunk. But today this method fell into oblivion, and now only struts are used.

Of course, requirements to these parts are not so strict, as to their brothers installed on suspension. But still, it is better to pick up these components wisely, taking into account some specifics. Specifics of hood struts
Exploiting car in winter, don’t open its hood sharply, if it’s not fully warmed up. Do it smoothly, to make liquid inside strut flow slowly. Remember one important thing: if your car has quite heavy hood, install tight struts. This is because during repair or other manipulations in engine bay it can suddenly swing shut. We all know: the more body mass, the faster it falls. So, such hood can do much harm to driver.
Selection of hood struts
The first condition of hood struts selection is frequency of use. Some of drivers look under hood more often (or they just like it), than into trunk. This is an important aspect in selecting a strut. According to this, the material must be long-wearing.
Before picking up a specific model you like, you should learn specifications of your car carefully. In user manual must be described all specifications and properties of components, which are installed in your car. The same goes to hood struts. If you pick up them wrong, they’ll work incorrectly, and thus fail soon enough.
Determine the hood opening length. Because the strut you liked at first sight may be short. And you won’t be able to open the hood of your car as you need. There were cases, when drivers picked up to short struts and then couldn’t even check oil level.
As of any other mechanism of car, there few aspects of hood struts classification:
1. By dampening:
• Hydraulic dampening: rapid deceleration of hood. In this case hydraulic strut is installed with rod end down.
• Dynamic dampening: it differs from previous one with more slowly deceleration. Such struts are installed in any direction.
2. By working filling:
• Gas struts – the most expensive ones, but they are most quality and lasting.
• Gas-oil struts – are cheaper than previous ones, but also less resistant to cold.
• Oil struts – are cheap, have high specs, but aren’t resistant to cold.
Hood struts are quite durable, but only if they’re used properly. Besides, it is not hard to replace or install them on your own. This can do even novice-driver.
The main thing is to pick up struts correctly. Moreover, you can select through electronic parts catalogs, and it takes little time. And if only one hood strut failed, it is recommended to replace both of them.
Replacement of hood struts
Before installing of a hood strut, make sure that there is enough of place for it and it doesn’t interfere with hood closing process. Usually, for new models, which are not equipped with hood struts, there are sets for sale, which include bolts, screws and bracket. That means you need just to pick up necessary strut according to criteria and peculiarities described above.
To find out length of necessary component in open state, find fitting hole on car’s fender and inner side of hood, then measure distance between them. If you pick up longer strut, the hood will open too wide, which is not always good.
The installation process takes 10-15 minutes:
• Fasten L-bracket to inner side of hood.
• Fasten an oblong screw in fitting hole on a fender.
• Now attach one end of strut, and a second to – to bracket, turning it through 90°.
That’s all, everything is set. We recommend greasing attaching spots with rust-preventing agent, because underhood space is quite exposed to adverse effects of rusting.
