Car valve adjustment: what is it for?

Power pack of every car is constructer in the way that its every cylinder has two or more valves. One (ones) of them inserts fuel blend, the second exhausts gas. That’s why they are called induction and emission valves. The mechanism that brings these elements of combustion engine into action is called variable valve event (VVEL) and lift or valve gear.

When engine reaches high temperature level, its parts heat and expand. Therefore, the lashes on cold engine between parts must be strictly spotted with account for their further extension. The power pack might not work on its full capacity falsely adjusted valves. And even significantly lower its resources. For example, if the lashes a too small, then valves will be exposed to constant burning. Otherwise, when the lashes are too big, and the valves will not fully unseat, there will be a noticeable vehicle power reduction provided with specific metallic knock in engine room.

How will valves work with incorrect lash?

It is recommended to inspect the valves every 25 000-30 000 km. Adjust them if necessary. After that, you can start the valves inspection. But first, check if the engine cooled down. Only after that, begin the inspection. In this position the valves will be closed. Then ease the valve adjusting screw locknut. With adjusting screw tune the lash and tighten the nut. After this procedure the lash might be changed. That’s why you must be very careful performing this operation. If flat gage probe pierces it with a bit of force, then everything is done correctly. Or if you must make an effort or the gage probe easily goes through, than you must continue adjustment.

How will valves work with incorrect lash?

In cases, described above, the valves functioning will be disturbed. The valves will open more, than they should or stay constantly open. As a result, the cylinder will lose its hermetic state.

How to avoid valve adjustment?

Have you ever asked yourself: “Why there is no need in valve adjustment for modern 16-cylinder cars?” This is because in such cars hydraulic lifter is installed instead of lifters, due to which the camshaft cam pushes the valve. They make an optimal lash between themselves and cams due to oil high pressure. The result of this is that valves always work with optimal lashes. The good news is that such hydraulic lash adjusters are installed almost on every car. This could mean that you can forget about adjustment of valves BUT! Such elements of power pack system can only be installed in those cars, the VVEL of which consists of crankshaft, camshaft, valves and piston block. This is, in fact, the base part of car.
